From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
I would like to thank the Funeral Service for an outstanding servuce in helping us as a family navigate this time. Gerry was first class and did an amazing job for us and my late father. The communication throughout was brilliant and nothing was a bother. If you are looking for someone who cares Gerry and WS Harrisons are the people to do that.
This is the third family funeral W S Harrison have arranged for us. The service they provide is always excellent during such a difficult time. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
All of the staff at the Whitley Bay branch were very professional, patient and respectful.
Communication was excellent and we were kept updated at every stage of the arrangements.
Rob who we had a lot of contact with ensured that from arranging the service to the day itself every detail was handled perfectly.
Thank you
A professional service from start to finish. As a family we were treated with great respect and kindness. Mum was well looked after and I felt she was treated with respect. The funeral itself was extremely well arranged and it made an extremely difficult day much easier. Thank you for all you did for our family at this difficult time.

We feel we were treated with complete respect and wonderful care by all the team. I must highlight the kindness and professionalism by Jerry Young our Funeral Director. Nothing was too much trouble and the regular contact checks and updates were welcome and invaluable for the family's peace of mind. I would not hesitate to recommend your business to anyone. Thanks so much again.
From beginning to end of arranging my brother David Thomas’s funeral W. S. Harrison’s funeral Director Mr. Jerry Young could not have been more caring and helpful with making all final points stress free to myself and wife.
The lady receptionist’s at the Chapel of Rest Whitley Lodge were really pleasant and helpful.
I can’t thank W. S. Harrison of Dignity Funerals along with Mr. Jerry Young and Susan Ormston (Celebrant) for making a sad day a pleasant day to remember.
